Theresa's Project Proposal

Items needed for project:

A constructed circular room
360/2way projector
Surround sound speakers
Crisis Video
Caution & Instruction sign (placed outside the installation)

Purpose:

1. The space is enclosed you feel like you are experiencing this atrocity in reality

2. The human need/attraction to witness atrocity

3. Protesting, providing a glimpse of atrocity in the war front of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.

This installation neither created by the artist nor does it provide credit to the creator of the art work (the video). The unknown artist’s video is displayed in a “chamber” that is created by an artist. The purpose of itself is to bring to attention the atrocity of war and violence in a form of Art Activism. It creates a virtual space and tries to place the viewer in the scene of the video. The video is blown up to be life-sized and displays a 360 degree view thereby causing the viewer to feel that they are amidst the atrocity and experiencing the event first hand. The instruction on the outside of the installation reads, “One person at a time,” in order to isolate the viewer from the reality of their “safe” life. There are no chairs or seats to sit on while observing the video and the X mark on the middle indicate where the observer should be standing. The purpose of this is to separate the viewer from anything that may remind them of their actual reality.

Even with the clear descriptive sign, I believe people would want to enter and see for themselves the horrifying footage. This is because of the human need to look at and watch an atrocity. For example when we drive by an accident, do we not slow down and look? And when we do, are we not slightly disappointed when we discover it wasn’t a serious accident? This is because we know we are in the “safe” and nothing like that could happen to us because we are the observer. Another aspect of this installation is to make the viewer feel guilty; guilty of their voyeurism, lack of knowledge and the inability to do anything about the situation. Thus forcing the viewer to appreciate the safe environment they live in.

What is this being protested?

The Government of Sri Lanka has been under severe criticism for taking the bold step to eradicate terrorism once and for all after years of attempts at ceasefires and negotiations. The people of Sri Lanka have been killed through terrorist war tactic of suicide bombs and the country has lost 70,000 people over the 30 years. While 56% of Tamil speaking people live peacefully in the south of Sri Lanka among the majority of the Sinhalese people and other minorities enjoying equal rights in education, employment, land ownership business ownership, politics and professions, the LTTE took to terrorism claiming Genocide and Discrimination.
The video clip will prove to the world that they are killing their own Tamil people held hostage as human shields and having the audacity to twist the truth and blame the Government. The Diaspora in the United States of America, United Kingdom , Canada and other nations raise funds for this purpose.

Men, women, children and even pregnant women have been shot in the last few days of the battle during desperate attempts in trying to flee from the LTTE. One young boy who tried to run away had both his legs cut off in the midst of others and his parents. The graphic video is attached for all to see the ruthless actions of the LTTE.

The Fate of a Boy Who Tried To Escape from LTTE Clutches

This is a very disturbing video. It should not be viewed by children. This video shows the barbaric acts that were done to a boy who, together with his family, tried to escape being held as a 'human shield" by the terrorists of Sri Lanka, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The boy's legs had been chopped off by an axe, in front of his own family, as a 'punishment' for trying to escape. Mercifully, the boy had died soon. Note how a Red Cross worker is aiding.
This is only a tiny fraction of the inhuman treatment that innocent Tamil people who are being held by the LTTE for their protection, are being subjected to. The Tamil diasporas in western countries paint a very different picture however. In order to receive international support to stop the Sri Lankan armed forces from completely eliminating these psychopathic terrorists, they protest by siding with the LTTE as they themselves are drawn into the false LTTE propaganda. The government of Sri Lanka is trying to help these innocent Tamil civilians to regain a life free from terrorists. It is too bad that those in the United Nations, the "Human Rights Watch" with many other international aid organizations and many other politicians have fallen for their blatant lies. They say that one can fool some people some of the time, but no one can fool all the people all the time. If a picture says a thousand words, then a motion picture should speak volumes of truth and touch the heart of those who care. The dialogs in the video are in Tamil.
